Wayne State University School of Medicine – 2nd Look Day
Each spring during the month of April the Wayne State University School of Medicine holds its Annual “2nd Look Day” for those undergraduate students who have been accepted into medical school at Wayne State University School of Medicine as well as being accepted into other medical schools around the United States. The School of Medicine invites these highly ranked students for a second more in-depth interview at Wayne State in the hopes of influencing theses students to matriculate to Wayne State University School of Medicine for their medical school training.
In an effort to show how the Department of Surgery and Wayne State University provides a unique surgical skills training experience for medical students, the undergraduate students are provided a brief but intense ‘hands-on’ training exposure to open and laparoscopic surgical skills training in the Surgical Skills Task Training Room at the Mazurek Educational Commons.
Under the direction of Dr. Stephen J. Bradley, Educational Planner for the Department of Surgery and Director of the Surgical Skills and Simulation Training Program, the undergraduate students receive 45 minutes of lectures and skills trainings similar to 3rd and 4th year medical students receive during their surgical clerkships.
Undergraduate students receive instruction and then perform basic open surgical skills such as basic knot tying, forceps handling, needle driving, and wound closure techniques on inanimate models. The students are given the opportunity to perform several basic laparoscopic procedures such as grasping and transfer of solid objects and performance of precision cutting tasks.
The experience of the undergraduate students in the surgical skills laboratory has been uniformly ranked as the most highly rated activity during the 2nd Look Day. Several current Wayne State medical students who previously attended this event have indicated their decision to attend Wayne State for medical school training was a result of their experience at 2nd Look Day and the time they spent in the surgical skills laboratory.
